Teacher Profiles Academy of Yoga Director & Instructor Monica has practiced yoga since 1994 and has taught during the past five years in Grand Junction and New York. She is an RYT 500-E registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance and holds an Iyengar Certification as well. In 1998, Monica traveled to India to study with BKS Iyengar, Geeta and Prashant Iyengar. She has studied at the International Iyengar Institutes in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Florence, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Los Angeles, Denver and New York. In 2001, after Monica attended the Yoga Odyssey with Geeta Iyengar in Pasadena, CA, she came to Grand Junction for another teacher training at the Academy of Yoga where she earned her 200-hour teacher training certificate and began to teach. In Australia, she attended 6-1/2 weeks of the 8-week teacher training in 2000. In 2002, Monica again came back for part of the teacher training given at the Academy and and in 2003 she came to Grand Junction to substitute teach classes and again attended the 7-week teacher training. In 2004, she participated and assisted during the 2 Teacher Training Courses given at the Academy of Yoga with Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher Nancy Stechert. Since 2004, she has been assisting in teacher trainings at the Academy and has earned her RYT 500-E certification with Yoga Alliance. Monica is always involved in the "yoga scene" and she had attended workshops, conferences, and conventions all over the country. She has studied for the past decade with the most prominent yoga teachers in the world. She is very grateful for her past teachers, mainly Sylvie Terree. She is also grateful to Rodney Yee, David Life and Shanon Gannon, John Friend, Erich Schifmann, Jason Brown, Kevin Gardiner, Kevin Durkin, Donita and Gary Reitze, Ecknart Easwaran, Nicky Knoff and Nancy Stechert for being so inspiring. She thanks John Cullinane, her husband, and co-owner of the Academy, for teaching her what really yoga is and for making her dreams come true, and of course, she thanks a Higher power. ***** Instructor Analii has had a vast professional career in dance as a teacher, performer and choreographer of modern dance and ballet. She was introduced to yoga in Boulder in the 1980's as a dancer to prevent injury and supplement her technique. She holds a degree in Dance & Exercise Physiology. She began her extensive training and teaching after the birth of her twins. She has studied Iyengar/Ashtanga yoga here at the Academy , Ashtanga style with Doug Swenson in Hawaii and is currently teaching Hot Yoga in Grand Junction. Analii's dance background influences her style which is a powerful, flowing, graceful style of yoga. She had also completed the Fall 2004 500-hour Iyengar Teacher Training at the Academy of Yoga. ***** Instructor Christen joins the Academy of Yoga from the Santa Fe area of Northern New Mexico. She has been a student of yoga since 1992. Christen has practiced with a Senior Iyengar instructor for twelve years and had also been a student of classical Hatha and Kundalini yoga. Over the years she has attended various conferences and workshops with such prominent teachers as Rodney Yee, Patricia Walden, Erick Schifman, Judith Lasater, Gary Kraftsow, Jon Friend, John Schumacher, Mary Dunn, etc. Christen obtained her Pilates certification in 2003 and has found it to be a wonderful compliment to her yoga background. She has attended Yoga Fit training and a variety of other training sessions on the Feldenkrais Method, Somatics, Spinal Stabilization, etc. Early in 2003, Christen had the opportunity to devote more time to her love of yoga by becoming an instructor. Christen has taught classes for fitness centers, dance schools, Yoga & Pilates studios, university continuing education programs, on-site corporate wellness programs and Montessori schools.
***** Instructor Christopher came to the Academy of Yoga from Hawaii. He studied yoga in Hawaii, Oregon, and Phoenix in the Hatha yoga/Iyengar tradition. After seven years of intermittent practice, he became more devoted after beginning classes at the Academy and completed Foundation I & II in the summer of 2007. He completed his 200 hour Teacher Training in the spring of 2008 at the Academy and has taught classes at the Academy, the Fruita Yurt, and for Primary Care Partners, Hilltop, and Rocky Mountain Health Care programs. Christopher holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Hawaii and has taught in higher education in Oregon, Hawaii, Texas, and for two years as a Visiting Professor at Mesa State College.
